How A Beauty Addict Gave Birth
It’s no secret that I have long standing relationships with any beauty supply within a 30 mile radius, but the relationship I was preparing for was going to be my most important one thus far.
From the moment I found out I was pregnant I daydreamed about every little detail of mommy hood including what my delivery would be like.
In these daydreams I had a perfect blow out, extensions clipped in, and a slayed face with on point wispy lashes. I was glowing from the excitement and since I had my entire makeup bag with me I was able to touch up for those oh so perfect first mommy and me shoots.
I also optimistically pondered the idea of my water breaking in my sleep so I would have time to shower and shave before even heading to the hospital. OK I’ll snap back to reality so all the moms reading this can stop rolling their eyes and hear the truth about how this beauty junkie delivered and how I managed to stay true to myself and the process and how you can too.
As the final weeks of my pregnancy approached the once so optimistic glamazon soon to be mom slowly started to fade. The visions of a full done face and perfectly curled hair came to a halt about the same time my drive to put on a bra did. I felt huge, I couldn’t sleep and so as you can imagine my beauty routine had to be adjusted.
Normally I wake up, cleanse, tone and moisturize. Well that went out the window along with all the cute clothes that used to fit. I used to plug in my flat iron and start priming my skin for foundation while it heated up. The new me rolled out of bed washed my face, ate anything I could get my hands on in the wee hours of the morning and threw my hair up in a bun.
When I got a grasp on reality and really started to realize that my little guy was going to arrive any day I started taking some pre –glam precautions to ensure that if I couldn’t look my best I would at least feel my best. I made sure to exfoliate and hydrate twice daily but being a true beauty addict meant that I couldn’t just go without makeup, I mean come on I won’t even do a target haul without at least powder, brows, mascara and contour. It’s who I am and unapologetically it’s who was going to give birth to this amazing baby. So here’s what I did to maintain my glam and my sanity during delivery and how you can too.
1. ) Tony Moly 7 Days Tattoo Eyebrow - COMING SOON TO SLEEKHAIR.COM (in 1 week!)
Brows are the bones to any good makeup job so I wasn’t willing to go without. I have naturally blonde hair so normally I have a classic Instagram high arch brow and don’t feel bad about it. But when you’re in labor and sweating like Channing Tatum just gave you a lap dance there is no time to touch up any brow pomade or powders. That is why I decided to use a brow tattoo pen and let me tell you, best decision ever. My brows stayed in place no matter how many wet clothes were put on my forehead and it’s really easy to apply, you simply fill in your brows and it will stay intact all day, all night. Also doubles as a fine eyeliner! Best hospital brows ever.
Now I already knew I wasn’t going to be able to do my normal foundation, concealer, powder, bronzer, blush, highlight and baking routine so I found an alternative to help me achieve my sculpted look without much effort and without the need for timely touch ups. I found this gem of a product from NYX called Sculpt & Highlight face duo. It’s a dual ended wand with a darker color liquid and a lighter color liquid. The beauty of this product is that the lighter color can be used to highlight and conceal any imperfections and the darker color can be used to contour. This duo is super compact; an absolute must for any contour addict.
Call NASA because normally I apply lashes that could fly any girl to the moon, but knowing that I was going to be going into labor any day I decided to pick up Sigma’s Monumental mascara. It gave this lash loving gal the boost I needed without all the fuss of applying falsies.
Now I know all the green mamas out there are thinking “oh no she didn’t, lipstick is going to get all over that fresh new baby” And you are right, which is why I choose to ditch my LLG (liner, lipstick, gloss) combo and pick up a peel off tattoo lip gloss. This product is amazing! You apply the gloss to your lips, let it set for about 5 minutes, peel it off and BAM you have a stellar lip color that won’t get all over your new baby’s kissable cheeks.
The last thing any new mom wants to worry about is her hair. I ended up going through 30 hours of labor and then an emergency c-section so thankful that I had my hair up with these nifty little gadgets called invisibobbles. They really cling to the hair without damaging it. You simply use them as you would any hair tie!
Oh and I brought along my all time favorite dry shampoo from blow pro because let’s be honest there isn’t much of a difference between hospital showers and the bathrooms at Coachella, So save yourself the worry and don’t forget your dry shampoo.
Well there you have it, my dreams of a perfectly maintained do and slayed face didn’t come to pass during delivery, but who cares about any of that when your dreams start to stare you in the face.
